Septum Elevator

A Septum Elevator is a surgical instrument used mostly in ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) operations — especially in septoplasty or rhinoplasty — to lift or separate the mucoperichondrium (and sometimes mucoperiosteum) from the underlying cartilaginous or bony septum. This lifting is needed so that the surgeon can access, trim, reshape, or repair the cartilage or bone without injuring the soft tissue lining.

Key Features & Parts

FeatureWhat it is / What to expect
Working End / TipUsually has one or two tips/blades. Tips may be blunt, semi‑sharp, or sharp, depending on how easily separation is needed. Some tips are spatula‑shaped, round‑edged, or tapered. The shape is designed to minimize damage to the mucosa.
Double‑ended vs Single‑endedMany septum elevators are double‑ended: one side may be sharp (for initial dissection) and the other blunt (for lifting). Single‑ended versions also exist.
Blade WidthsVary typically from ~3 mm up to 6‑10 mm or more, depending on manufacturer and intended use. Narrower tips for delicate areas; wider ones for broader elevation.
LengthUsually in the range of ~ 16‑24 cm (≈ 6¼‑9½ inches), depending on design. Longer shafts help reach deeper areas but may reduce control if too l
long.
Handle / GripHandle may be flat, hollow, solid, textured or serrated to improve grip. Sometimes there is a shaft with grip features. Balanced to minimize hand fatigue.
Material & FinishSurgical‑grade stainless steel is typical. Finish may be satin to reduce glare and improve sterilization performance. Instruments are reusable.
SterilitySupplied non‑sterile in many cases; must be sterilized before use. Reusable.
VariantsDifferent named models (Freer, Killian, Joseph, Cottle, etc.), with specific curves, blade shapes, tip angles, and sometimes features like hollow handles or serrated grips.
